What's for dinner you ask? If you're serving a plump-breasted chicken, shelf-stable tomatoes and corn, you might be getting more than you bargained for. Learn more about what's in your grocery basket when Weaver's Way Co-op and The Waldorf School of Philadelphia co-sponsor a screening and discussion of Robert Kenner's thought-provoking film, Food, Inc., on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00 pm.
Food, Inc. explores the subject of how America's food is produced and controlled by a handful of agribusinesses that "... often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment". The film features interviews with noted food journalists Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto); Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirschberg; Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms; and Barbara Kowalcyk, a food safety advocate whose two year-old died after eating food contaminated with E. coli. Food, Inc. promises to open consumers' eyes to the realities of what we eat, how our food is produced, and what we can do to provide safe, nutritious food for ourselves and our families. To learn more about the film, watch the movie trailer at www.foodincmovie.com.
Screening of Food, Inc. will take place in the auditorium at The Waldorf School of Philadelphia located at 7500 Germantown Avenue on the campus of The New Covenant Church. A facilitated discussion will follow the film with invited guest speakers. Admission is free with donation of a healthy, non-perishable item for the Germantown Crisis Ministry, a food pantry that serves residents in Northwest Philadelphia.
